India is the land of festivals. Diwali is a popular festival celebrated all over India. It is the festival of lights and the celebrations last for 3 to 5 days. People decorate their home with flowers and lights. They celebrate by gifting people with clothes and sweets. Fireworks display in the evening is another part of Diwali celebrations. The festival celebrates the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya after completing his 14-years of exile and it is celebrated by lighting diyas to welcome him. Another legend associated with Diwali is the killing of Narakasura, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil. It is an official holiday for offices and banks on this day. Diwali is related to end of harvest season when farmers seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity.

Diwali Gifts

Diwali is a day to show our affection to our near and dear ones and gifts play an important part in doing so. It shows our care and love for our kin and friends. After Diwali pooja and lighting up of the house, the gifts are exchanged. The gifts include sweets, gold and silver gifts and a Diwali special pooja thali. Sweets are the most common way to show the love. Gold ornaments and coins make a Diwali celebration complete. Silver idols, jewellery and coins too are given as Diwali gifts.  People compete to get the best gifts for their loved ones. Presenting statues of Lord Ganesha or Goddess Lakshmi symbolizes that they grant them with wealth and prosperity.

Celebration of Diwali

People start first with decorating their home with flowers and rangolies. Deepavali Pooja is performed before the sunset. To invite Goddess Lakshmi, the house needs to be clean and beautiful. The preparations begin a lot earlier with the cleaning and tidying up of the house, redecorating it. Diwali rangolis are made with colored rice flour paste and used to create various designs on floor and walls. Red roses and marigold are used most to decorate the designs. The red color makes it look special and is mostly used. Then, they light up their homes with diyas or lights. Candles with flower designs are also used to add beauty to the decorations. People go on a shopping spree and buy new clothes and other accessories for the celebrations. The evening celebrations light up with the start of fireworks. Fireworks include chakras, rickets, flower pots and these lights up the sky. Sweets are distributed during the celebration among the people. Popular sweets among them are peda, barfi, laddu, halwa and so on. Diwali games add a special flavor to the celebrations. Fireworks competitions, candle lighting competitions are a good option for Diwali games. It makes the evening fun filled and enjoyable.
